Scout Troop 157 will be conducting a winter outing at Camp Lawton on Mt
Lemmon the weekend of January 24 - 26. Ham radio operators are welcome to
attend and operate, either outside or in warm, comfortable cabins. You must have
an advance reservation so the Scouts will know how many people to feed.
The event will be in and around the staff cabin area.
Each cabin is heated, has 120-Volt outlets, four sets of bunk beds, and perhaps
one or two small tables. Also available on-site are lighted and heated multiple
restrooms and clean showers. Winter weather on the mountain is as we know unpredictable,
but one can expect night time temperatures in the 20s.
There is a very large covered outdoor kitchen area. The Scouts will provide meals.
So, the creature comforts are good. Access is via an unpaved road with an up-hill
drive into the cabin area. Four-wheel drive is recommended, chains possible.
Normal vehicles can easily get into the cabin area if there is not two much snow or ice. Again, RVs or
trailers are OK depending on road conditions.
Note: Joe, K3TYE, will be checking driving conditions a few days before the event.
One cabin has been set aside for ham radio operators to use as a sleeping and
multi-station operating facility. The cabin will hold 4 hams, each with a bunk bed.
Sleep below and store your gear on the bed above. An additional cabin is available
if more than four hams participate.
You are welcome to submit your log to the national Winter Field Day folks. Click here,

for event and log submission information.
Again, weather and snow conditions permitting, you can use your trailer or motor
home. There is some room to park at the cabins. If that area gets full, we can park
at the Scout Camp general parking area or near the dining hall. Either is just a
short walk from the cabin area. Scouts should be available to help porter your
equipment.
If you plan to operate from your trailer or motor home you must coordinate your
band assignment with the hams at the cabin site. Dress for cold winter weather and
trail walking. Not much is paved. Tennis shoes are not a good choice for
footwear. Slippery conditions will prevail and there will likely be ice and/or snow.
Reservations
Make your reservation with Joe Statkevicus, K3TYE.
Cost is a free-will donation. If you are staying in the cabins, I recommend $50. The cabins are costing Troop
157 $100.00 per night. Cash or check payable to Scout Troop 157.
While Joe is a ham, his primary activity during the event will be with the Scouts.
For additional information or making a reservation contact Joe Statkevicus, K3TYE.
YOUR RESERVATION IS DUE PRIOR TO 15 JANUARY 2020.
